De waanzinnige avonturen van Alfred Kropp is zo’n boek. Zelden heb ik me zo geërgerd aan een personage. Het maakt echt niet uit dat Alfred Kropp lelijk, dik en dom is: de echte held is de anti-held. Maar Kropp is irritant, kan zijn kop niet houden en wat hij zegt slaat nergens op.
De grote kunst van schrijven is om iets te zeggen zonder het te zeggen. Schrijver Rick Yancey heeft hier duidelijk nog nooit van gehoord. Yo Rick: twaalf keer per hoofdstuk zeggen dat iemand ‘bijna moet huilen’ wil nog niet zeggen dat we meteen met diegene meeleven! Of dat we überhaupt snappen waarom diegene moet huilen en ook maar een beetje begrip voor de persoon in kwestie hebben.
Daar komt nog bij dat je de belangrijkste plotwending, het grote 'ta-taa-TAAA!'-moment, al ziet aankomen vanaf bladzijde drie…
Ik vind mezelf nou niet bepaald een superschrijver. Maar als zelfs een boek als dit wordt gepubliceerd, dan moet er wel hoop zijn voor mijn spul! ;)
Of misschien zie ik gewoon niet het verschil tussen kunst en crap en is Alfred Kropp het beste boek ooit geschreven…

Second: I don’t know the author personally, so I’d never say he sucks. But no, I did not like the book. Main reason was that I didn’t connect to main character Alfred Kropp at all. In my post I explained I didn’t care that the kid was overweight and not very smart: the best hero is the anti-hero, right? But frankly I was just overall annoyed by Alfred and the things he said…
I think the beauty about writing is to say something without actually saying it. Rick Yancey – in my eyes – did not do that enough: he just wrote Alfred ‘felt like crying’ twelve times a chapter, without further explaining what Alfred felt at that moment or what it was that made him almost cry. Off course I have an imagination and I could easily think of a few reasons, but it just didn’t touch me in any way. And that, in the end, is something that I look for in a book.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know shit about writing: I’ve never published a book and probably never will, so I should just shut up really :) That’s why I concluded my post with the remark that I maybe just don’t see the difference between art and crap - hence the link.
So that’s it. I hope I haven’t offended you in any way, although I probably have because I’m criticizing someone you know… My apologies in advance for that, though I still believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion as long as it's given in a respectable and reasonable way. I hope we can agree on that.
